Gale Virtual Reference Library
February 12, 2009Akron-Summit County Public Library is among the growing number of libraries taking their resources online. We have recently invested in electronic reference books from Gale Virtual Reference Library, the unprecedented eReference platform offered by reference book and database publisher Gale, a part of Cengage Learning. This partnership will allow libraries throughout the library system to provide patrons with more convenient access to the authoritative information resources housed inside the library.
Hoovers Online
September 2, 2008The Akron-Summit County Public Library subscribes to Hoovers Online, a business database designed to provide insight into companies and executives. This subscription provides access to in-depth company profiles for more than 40,000 companies, public and private, worldwide, as well as to financial information, news, and industry information. It is an excellent starting point for company research for job hunters, investors and students.
Hoovers allows you to:

HEALTH & WELLNESS RESOURCE CENTER
August 18, 2008While there is a vast array of health and medical websites, their quality varies greatly. So how do you find information you can trust? One excellent source is the Health & Wellness Resource Center accessible either in the Library or from home through the Library’s website with your library card barcode. Using a simple keyword search you can access overviews and fact sheets about a huge variety of medical conditions and diseases, prescription and non-prescription drugs, treatments, medical tests, alternative medicine, fitness, nutrition and more. An Advanced Search option can help you refine your search. The database also searches articles in over 2000 magazines and nearly 400 medical journals, many available in full-text. In addition the database includes over 700 videos on health topics; hundreds of full-text pamphlets from government agencies and many organizations; a directory of contact information for agencies, associations, schools, and healthcare facilities; a dictionary and much more. HWRC subscribes to the HONcode, an international organization that certifies the reliability and usefulness of Health on the Net websites.
New England Ancestors

New England Ancestors is not limited to its great database collection. Researchers have access to genealogy articles and event news of the NEHGS; help from an online genealogist; the NEHGS library catalog; online seminars; and information about the society’s research services.

SAMS Photofact
July 14, 2008For do-it-yourselfers as well as electronic repair technicians, PhotofactOnline.com is a database containing schematics and manuals for more than 200,000 models of radios, TVs, and other consumer electronics items—both old and new. It is searchable by a complete or partial chassis or model number. It can be accessed at any of the Library’s locations.

- ProQuest National Newspapers Premier carries full-text newspapers from 44 major cities and the Christian Science Monitor with varying starting dates beginning from the 1980’s to current.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers™ provides easy access to the past. Researchers can search 21 different article types to find exactly what they are looking for, including: News, Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Obituaries, Birth & Marriage Announcements, Stock Photos, Advertisements, and more.

TumbleBook Library
June 16, 2008Kids of all ages – put on your headphones and plug into TumbleBook Library, which includes a variety of fun reading and literature activities for children. TumbleBooks can be found on our website’s listing of databases and can be used at the library or from home. The Tumblebook Library has a selection of children’s favorite story books, ranging from favorite fairy tales to new stories like Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin. There is a quiz to test comprehension for each book. In the Language Learning section there are books in Spanish and French; and stories in other languages are being added. TumbleReadables provide older students the chance to read a growing collection of children’s classics such as Black Beauty and Anne of Green Gables on-line. You can also listen to audiobooks that include unabridged versions of children’s classics of American and World literature like Aesop’s Fables and The House at Pooh Corner. Kids will enjoy the Puzzles and Games collection of concentration games, spelling games and “fill-in-the-blank” games, too. Parents and teachers will find additional information and activities in the Educators’ Resources link at the bottom of the home page. There are plenty of activities here to keep kids busy all summer long!
World Vital Records Database
June 10, 2008The library now subscribes to World Vital Records (WVR). This site contains a mix of free and subscription content that is continuously updated. Not all of the content on WVR is unique, but it does provide a one-stop research tool for genealogists. It contains not only U.S. Records but international ones as well. Some of the databases included are: Quintin Database (a collection of county histories, biographies, and city directories), SmallTownPapers Collections, International Parish Register Collection, International Marriages, World Gazetteer Collection, Find A Grave, Family Search, Everton Publishers and more. It also features “Recently Added Major Collections” and “Genealogy News” so you can always find out the most recent updates to all of the databases within WVR.
